Whaley Bridge - Edwina Currie

Edwina grew up in Liverpool and won a scholarship to Oxford University. For 11 years she was a Birmingham City Councillor, then from 1983 to 1997 she served as MP for Derbyshire South, helping to bring the Toyota factory to the UK.

She and her husband John Jones, formerly a senior detective in the Metropolitan Police, made their home in the High Peak ten years ago. When John died after a long battle with cancer, Edwina was able to return to politics to stand in Whaley Bridge where she lives.

As the organiser of the High Peak Business Club since 2014 she’s keen to see the local economy recover as quickly as possible. As a former teacher (and now grandma), getting pupils settled back into school, and raising standards and expectations, is a priority. And with the experience of Hospice at Home for John, Edwina wants to help prepare for changes in the way health and social care are delivered, particularly in a rural area with a high percentage of older people.

Edwina is well-known on TV and radio, has won Celebrity Mastermind twice, and has appeared on both Strictly Come Dancing and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. You may also see her in her electric car, keen to see the Peak District going green in years to come.
