The Labour Government is forcing local councils in areas like ours to reorganise. That means scrapping the current system where County and Borough Councils share responsibilities and replacing it with a single council running all services.
Here in Derbyshire, Labour and Reform UK councillors have struck a backroom deal to carve up our county. Their plan would split Derbyshire into “North” and “South”, handing huge new powers to Derby City Council.
Under their deal, Derby City would expand its boundaries into South Derbyshire and Erewash – creating a new “South Derbyshire Council” likely run from Derby.
Local people are right to be worried. Derby City Council already struggles to deliver basic services and faces major urban challenges. Residents across Long Eaton, Sandiacre, Breaston, Draycott and surrounding villages don’t want to pay higher taxes for worse services, with all the focus and funding going to the city.
The Conservatives had a better plan: to keep Derbyshire together under its current boundaries. But the new Reform UK administration at County Hall dropped it, choosing instead to work with Labour on their takeover plan.
Now, we want to hear what you think. Should Long Eaton be run from Derby? Have your say on all the options!
